One of the questions most asked is “How do I change money in Brazil?”

There are many options for you and some tips to keep you from getting ripped off.

First, don’t change money at your airport in your country where you’re leaving. Or if you do, don’t change very much, maybe $100 dollars or Euros would be enough. The reason is, you won’t get a good exchange rate, and when you arrive in Brazil, the exchange will be much higher.

Second; When you arrive, there are Brazilian Currency exchange offices at the airport called “Cambios” where you can change your currency into Brazilian Reais. The Cambios at the airport do not give the best rates, so it is better only to change a small amount of money there. Once you are in the city, there are many cambios that you can find with competitive rates.

There are also ATM machines. Be aware that not all ATM machines will take International Debit or Credit cards. The main ATMs that you can withdraw funds are those of Citibank, HSBC, and Banco do Brasil.  Some other Brazilian banks may have an ATM that you can use, but not all branches will have them. These include: Itaú, Unibanco, Santander, Banco Real, Banco Mercantil do Brasil, Safra, Banco da Amazônia, Banpará and Banestes.  You need to look for the VISA/MasterCard/Discover/AMEX logos on the ATM machine and use only those machines, your card will not work in a machine that doesn’t display these logos.

When using an ATM, there will be an option for you to select English or Ingles as you go along with your transaction so pay attention to the screen. You cannot go to a teller and ask for a Cash Advance on your card. They will only direct you to an ATM machine.  Another thing about ATM machines. All ATM’s stop dispensing money after 10pm with the exception of a few Citibank ATMs. But it is never a good idea to change money late at night when you could easily be robbed. Try to do all your money exchange during business hours. Also on the weekends, ATMs are limited in the amount of cash they will allow you to take out, usually around R$400- R$500 Reais. Make sure to let your bank know that you’ll be using your card in Brazil so they don’t block it. Brazil is notoriously known as the Credit/Debit card clone capital of the world, so if you use your card, make sure to check your balance daily online to see if there are not any “miscellaneous” transactions.

Another option at the airport are the Carregadores – these guys dress in Blue (in Rio) or Beige (Sao Paulo) outfits and look like porters waiting to take your luggage when you come out of customs, but rarely if ever do you see them helping anybody lug around 50lb suitcases. They will ask you if you want to exchange money when you come out and will usually ask you to follow them off to the side. The exchange rate is not very good, but you can negotiate. This is something to do if you need enough money to pay for a taxi or just some walking around money until you can get to a cambio that is away from the airport. Always go online to check what the current exchange rate is the day that you fly, so when you arrive in Brazil, you’ll know if you’re getting a good deal or not.

Oh, and a word about Travelers Cheques. Pretty much useless in Brazil – don’t bring them. Shops won’t take them and only a few places will change them at awful exchange rates. If you just don’t feel safe without them, American Express has offices at the major airports in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro where you can exchange them.
