Universal Zulu Nation,
Afrika Bambaataa one of the founders of Hip Hop’s Universal Zulu Nation, travels to Rio de Janeiro Brazil to celebrate 35 years of Hip Hop, Thursday at Eu Amo Baile Funk in the Marina da Gloria of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Baile funk, is a type of dance music from Rio de Janeiro, derived from Miami bass and rap. In Rio de Janeiro it is most often simply known as funk, although it is very different musically from what funk means in most other places. “Baile funk”, in Rio, refers not to the music, but to the actual parties in which the music is played.
Through co-opting of the street gang the Black Spades into the music and culture-oriented Universal Zulu Nation, Afrika Bambaataa is responsible for spreading hip hop culture throughout the world. On September 27, 2007, Afrika Bambaataa was nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This is Afrika Bambaataa’s first trip to Brazil to perform.
